After an opening ceremony at the gates of Graceland, the annual Candelight Vigil began Aug. 15, commemorating the death of Elvis Presley.
The “King of Rock and Roll,” a singer and actor widely regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century, died Aug. 16, 1977. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1935, Presley moved to Memphis when he was 13. He graduated from Humes High School in 1953 and began his storied career at Sun Studios the following year.
