Ask the Memphian: Why are my lights off but my neighbor’s are on?

If you’ve lived in Memphis long enough, you’ve sat in the dark and brooded. You’ve stared longingly across a lightless room, out the window and toward a warm, lit house across the street. 

“Why are their lights on but mine are out?” you may have asked yourself. “We’re on the same street.”

Daily Memphian reader S. Newton Anderson recently asked the same question. He walked down to Overton Square for dinner on a Saturday night in August. He saw one half of the street on, the other half off, inspiring him to reach out and pose this week’s “Ask The Memphian” query.
