The AM/DM podcast: The mystery of the Lakeland grocer

By , Daily Memphian Published: November 13, 2025 6:16 AM CT

The AM/DM is The Daily Memphian’s free weekday podcast. Listen in every morning around 6:30 a.m. to get the news you need for the day, as well as a critical — but quick — interview on a larger story.

There is nothing like the promise of a new grocery store, especially one that’s new to the market.

Some Memphians may remember how excited people were when Trader Joe’s opened its first area location in 2018. Or how some locals’ dream is for a Publix to open here.

Memphis’ obsession with grocery stores may go back to 1999, when Albertson’s bought Seessels. And then, in 2002, Schnucks bought the local Albertson’s. And then Kroger bought out Schnucks about a decade later.

Today, editorial director Mary Cashiola and suburbs reporter Michael Waddell talk about the possibility of a new grocery store in Lakeland and what new-to-the-market grocer it could be.
