Daily Jigsaw: A sour welcome back
An evening that began with warm and fuzzy feelings for Memphis Tigers fans ended on a sour note.
Before the public address announcer at FedExForum announced the starting lineups for Memphis’ game Sunday against UNLV, he told those in attendance to direct their attention to the jumbotron. Displayed on the screen was a 45-second video montage featuring the highlights of former Memphis coach Josh Pastner’s seven seasons with the Tigers.
About 2½ hours later, the final buzzer sounded on a 92-78 upset victory for Pastner — now in his first season as UNLV’s coach — and his Runnin’ Rebels against Memphis. The 14-point loss for the Tigers (1-2) marked their largest margin of defeat at home in Penny Hardaway’s seven-plus seasons as coach.
