Why is the University of Memphis’ mascot a tiger?

It’s a good question, and the answer, we are pleased to say, is more interesting than you’d think. One might assume the U of M would say something like, “It was between a tiger and elephant and a lion, and the students picked tiger,” and that would have been the end of the story. 

But Brigitte Billeaudeaux, an associate professor and head of special collections in the university libraries, said there’s a lot more to it than that.
