Herrington: My favorite films of 2025

By , Daily Memphian Updated: December 21, 2025 4:00 AM CT | Published: December 21, 2025 4:00 AM CT

Last year, only two of the movies in my 2024 Top 10 never played a Memphis theater, and that was because both went straight to streaming. A by-product of the times.

On the 2025 Top 10 below, only five will have screened in a Memphis theater by the end of the year, and none of the 10 — none — were straight-to-streaming.

My hope is that Oscar nominations will help three of the other five get a local theatrical release early next year, but even that is uncertain.

Chris Herrington has covered the Memphis Grizzlies, in one way or another, since the franchise’s second season in Memphis, while also writing about music, movies, food and civic life. As far as he knows, he’s the only member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association who is also a member of a film critics group and has also voted in national music critic polls for Rolling Stone and the Village Voice (RIP). He and his wife have two kids and, for reasons that sometimes elude him, three dogs.
