Four games into American Conference play, Memphis hasn’t separated itself from the pack the way many thought it would in a league filled with mediocre teams.

The Tigers (8-8, 3-1 American) are in a five-way tie for first place in the conference after a 55-53 win against Temple on Wednesday night at home marked another single-digit victory against a league foe.

Through 160 minutes of total game time in four conference matchups — wins against Temple, Rice and North Texas and a loss to Florida Atlantic — coach Penny Hardaway’s team has led for only a little more than 88 minutes. Its average margin of victory is 5.7 points.
