Walter Bailey called for more resistance to President Donald Trump’s administration policies as he stood outside the criminal justice center named in his honor on Monday’s federal holiday honoring civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. 

“We cannot celebrate the dreamer while the dream is being dismantled before our very eyes. We are at a critical crossroads in 2026. We see the shadows of the past moving over us … daring us,” said Bailey, an attorney and one of the last living members of the city’s Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s and 1970s.
