As Memphians prepare for the incoming severe weather, announcements for closings will increase.
Warming centers
To help residents stay safe during extreme cold, the City of Memphis is partnering with the Hospitality Hub to operate a warming center at First Baptist Church, 200 East Parkway N.
Transportation to the warming center can be arranged by calling 901-486-0939 during operating hours.
Additional community centers will be activated as needed based on weather conditions and community demand.
Libraries and parks
Memphis Public Libraries and Memphis Parks intend to operate at full service; however, hours and locations may be adjusted based on weather and road conditions. Select facilities may serve as inclement weather activation sites.
All events at the Town of Arlington’s Sam T. Wilson Public Library are cancelled for Saturday.
In Collierville, the Collierville Burch Library, and Collierville Community Center & Fitness Center are closed.
Stay informed
City of Memphis updates will be shared at MemphisTn.gov and through City of Memphis social media channels as conditions change. Additional information about the city’s winter weather plan is available here.
The Town of Arlington uses an emergency alert platform via email or by text to phone. To enroll, text ARLINGTONTN to 99411 and complete the enrollment.
City of Bartlett residents can find up to date information on the city’s social media sites or at their neighborhood information hub.
Collierville residents can find updates on the Town’s website where they can also sign up for phone or email alerts. Collierville Public Works transfer station will be closed. Residents are also reminded that the former landfill area, often referred to as “Mount Trashmore,” is a state-monitored construction site and remains off-limits to the public for sledding or any other activities.
For information about Germantown closures through Germantown Alert. Updates will also be posted on the City’s website and official social media channels as conditions change.
Lakeland residents can receive weather and safety updates via call, email, text and more with the City’s Mass Notification System.
Millington residents can find updates on the city’s social media sites and the city website and may sign up for alerts here.
Schools
After-school activities for Memphis-Shelby County County Schools campuses have been canceled for Friday, Jan. 23, the district announced. That includes athletic events. Y-Care remains open for students until 6 p.m.
Rhodes College will be closed the evening of Friday, Jan. 23, through Monday, Jan. 26, due to the impending winter storm. The college will shift to remote work Monday, Jan. 26, for staff.
Southwest Tennessee Community College will hold all Saturday classes Jan. 24 virtually. The college will pivot to remote learning for the day, and all campus locations will be closed for the weekend. The college will continue to monitor weather conditions and will provide updates as needed regarding operations for the upcoming week.
The Christian Brothers University campus will close Friday, Jan. 23, at 5 p.m. and will remain closed through the weekend. All on-campus events scheduled for Friday evening and this weekend are postponed.
All University of Memphis locations will transition to modified campus operations — including remote classes and work for students, faculty and staff — beginning Saturday, Jan. 24 through Monday, Jan. 26. Please note the university is not closed.
Animal shelters
Collierville Animal Shelter is closed for public visits and adoptions, but(internal care for animals will proceed.
Cancellations
Playhouse on the Square announces its Friday evening productions will go on as scheduled, but Saturday and Sunday shows are canceled. Both Friday evening shows begin at 8 p.m. “Jagged Little Pill” will be at Playhouse on the Square. “Sex/work” will be held at ThreatreWorks@TheSquare.
Theatre Memphis’ Friday evening performance of “Always a Bridesmaid” will go on as scheduled. But the Saturday and Sunday productions have been canceled. Those who purchased tickets for either of the canceled shows will be contacted for reassignment to another performance or refunds. The Shelby County Board of Commissioners has called off its Monday, Jan. 26 meeting. It has been rescheduled for Feb. 2.
Opera Memphis will not be able to present its scheduled performance of “The Barber of Seville” on Saturday, Jan. 24. Holders of Saturday tickets can reschedule for Friday by calling the box office at 901-257-3100. If rescheduling is not possible, the box office will reach out next week to outline next steps. Friday’s performance will proceed as planned.
