With Tennessee leading nation in maternal deaths, lawmakers advance mom-focused bills

NASHVILLE — Mother’s Day isn’t until May, but that’s not stopping lawmakers from working on mom-centric legislation. 

Senate Democratic Caucus Chair London Lamar, D-Memphis, announced a coordinated legislative push to improve maternal health outcomes in Tennessee. Several Republicans have also introduced legislation to ease mothers’ burdens.

Lamar designated Tuesday, Feb. 10, as “Maternal Health Day” on Capitol Hill, where she will host maternal health advocates, medical professionals and doulas to urge legislative action on reforms that could address gaps in prenatal and postpartum care.
