Calvary Episcopal Church announced Monday, Feb. 2, it is receiving nearly $1 million from the Mellon Foundation to develop a memorial to the thousands of slaves bought and sold at a slave market that once operated where the church parking lot is now.

The $996,000 grant won’t fund the memorial’s construction, but it will fund everything leading up to it — the design process, community engagement and continued research.

The project — known as “Legacy at 87 Adams” — has been in the works for nearly a decade.
