Martin: Hardaway loses another — and the heartbreak is setting in

John Martin is a contributing college sports columnist for The Daily Memphian. Martin is a lifelong Memphian who’s covered the Memphis Tigers’ basketball program for more than a decade. Before joining The Daily Memphian team, he was the Memphis beat writer for The Athletic. Moments after Memphis suffered another lopsided loss, this one on the road to South Florida, Penny Hardaway choked up.
“I wanted that game, bro,” he said, fighting back tears. “You know what I’m saying? It’s just...”
And then he stopped. He looked down at his lap for eight seconds, totally silent, before reiterating the point.
