CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — As Briarcrest took the floor to warm up for Saturday’s TSSAA BlueCross Division 2-AA boys basketball state championship game, assistant coach Fred Smith Sr. eagerly clapped his hands.

“Let’s do what we came to do,” he shouted, slapping palms with players in the layup line.

The Saints did just that. And, fittingly enough, it was coach Smith’s pride and joy — his namesake and baby boy — who scored the final points of a dream season.
