Memphis escapes severe wind damage, but freezing temps are on the way

Memphis escaped any major issues with the thunderstorms and strong winds that hit the area late Sunday, although around than 9,600 Memphis Light, Gas and Water customers were without power as of 11 p.m.
Forecasts had initially called for damaging wind gusts as well as sustained winds with the possibility of tornadoes. However, no tornadoes were reported in Shelby County, and the strongest wind gust was 52 mph recorded at the Memphis International Airport at 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Other than a couple of rain showers, much of that weather system had passed through the area by late Sunday. However, the NWS said, temperatures are falling and are expected to dip below freezing overnight, with a low of 31 degrees.
Monday and Tuesday are also expected to be cold, with Monday’s high in the low 40s and an expected low of about 29. Tuesday will be a little warmer with a high in the upper 40s, but the low could dip to around 26. Temperatures will warm up again beginning Wednesday, however.
