Mike McCarthy, a 35-year resident of Memphis and graduate of the Memphis Academy of Art, plays in bands, makes films, draws comics (and now sculpts) from his home in Cooper-Young. He is an activist working to re-open the Mid-South Coliseum and to save the 1940 Luciann movie theater.
Think of Aretha Franklin or Isaac Hayes in Soulsville, Willie Mitchell in Orange Mound and Dewey Phillips at the Hotel Chisca. A Rufus Thomas statue could go just about anywhere in town and Memphis Minnie and Furry Lewis sure would look good on Beale Street.
