Activists want community involved after public forum on MPD spy case
At the request of the crowd, activist Hunter Demster (right) reads the notes of Memphis Police Deputy Chief Don Crowe (left), who also attended a public forum Thursday, July 11, at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church to discuss MPD’s surveillance conduct. Attendees offered questions to a monitoring team about a court-ordered plan to bring reform to the MPD after officers were found conducting illegal surveillance of protesters, violating a 40-year-old consent decree barring such surveillance. Community activists say they still feel they're being watched and harassed by law enforcement, while a monitoring team says it is trying to ensure Memphis police comply with court-ordered reforms.
