John Zeanah said an interesting phrase as he stood outside FedExForum on Tuesday, April 21.
“Arena district.”
That’s how the city’s head of development and infrastructure described the area around Memphis’ NBA arena and neighboring Beale Street.
He pointed at the dumpster-lined backs of Beale Street businesses — which are a forward-facing sightline for Memphis Grizzlies’ team store shoppers — as something that could change in the coming years. The Memphis Police Department camera hovering over Beale could soon be higher up and blend in with a light pole.
“The idea is to start to bring together the infrastructure into one seamless experience around the arena, Beale Street and the surrounding area,” Zeanah said.
