Daily Jigsaw: Memphis Memorial Day
Memorial Day honors those who died while serving in the country’s armed forces and is observed with the laying of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
It originated as Decoration Day after the Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. The name was changed after World War I, and it became a federal holiday in 1971.
