Daily Jigsaw: Unknown U.S. Soldier

On Sunday afternoon, shadows from tiny American flags fluttered across thousands of headstones bearing the same phrase, “Unknown U.S. Soldier.”

For row after row, many of the headstones bear no name. Every 10 yards or so, a World War I or Spanish American War soldier from Mississippi or Tennessee breaks through the marble anonymity.

Memphis National Cemetery contains thousands of such graves. The unknown soldiers were originally buried in hastily dug graves on small battlefields and in a cemetery near a former Memphis field hospital where the wounded were taken.
