Chris Herrington has covered the Memphis Grizzlies, in one way or another, since the franchise’s second season in Memphis, while also writing about music, movies, food and civic life. As far as he knows, he’s the only member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association who is also a member of a film critics group and has also voted in national music critic polls for Rolling Stone and the Village Voice (RIP). He now splits his time between Minneapolis-St. Paul, where his wife works, and Memphis.

As we creep towards next week’s NBA Draft and the following week’s start of free agency, uncertainty continues percolating: Uncertainty about the future of the biggest offseason domino, Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and uncertainty about the top of the draft where the Memphis Grizzlies have to wait for decisions from the Washington Wizards and Utah Jazz to know what choice they will face at No. 3.

But teams can now negotiate with their own free agents and discuss trades with one another. The offseason has begun.

I’ve been examining the Grizzlies’ team-building toolkit and to-do list — the draft, roster/salary status, a potential Ja Morant trade, other internal roster decisions — in recent weeks.
