Daily Jigsaw: Riverdogs

It was a crazy idea.

Let’s say that right up front.

“Kinda crazy,” said Benji Wardell, age 10.

“I guess it was crazy,” said James Wardell, Benji’s dad, before explaining the idea.

“We took the kids, locked them in the cages, and have them hit all night.”

Baseball cages, he meant.

The Bayshore RiverDogs — a Little League team from Tampa — would hit baseballs from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

For a good cause!

“We would get people to donate based on how many buckets of balls we hit,” said James Wardell. “That was the idea. Our motto is, ‘No kid should miss a game because of cancer.’ We decided to give whatever we raised to St. Jude (Children’s Research Hospital).”

So that’s how this saga began. A saga that wound up in Memphis Saturday morning, with the RiverDogs playing a game against a team of Memphis kids at the Will Carruthers Ball Complex in Whitehaven.
