Daily Jigsaw: Celtic watch

On June 30, 2025, Celtic Crossing owner DJ Naylor deboarded his plane in Dublin to a series of grim text messages.

It was just minutes until 1 p.m. in Ireland, and 6:52 a.m. in Memphis.

A driver had suffered a medical issue while driving down Cooper Street in Midtown, became unconscious and crashed into the wooden front patio of the Irish Pub. The images of the wreck were tragic. Both the patio and the car were engulfed in smoke.

What came next were months of uncertainty about the bar’s future, negotiations with the landlord and, eventually, a $250,000 rebuild of the space to get it up to code.

Celtic Crossing — with its new patio — reopened on Sept. 11, 2025. It was a day of celebration for locals, especially soccer fans who had flooded the doors for English Premier League matchdays since it opened in 2005.
