How the Sterick Building hopes to transform a neighborhood Downtown
When the renovation of the Sterick Building was announced in 2023, I sometimes heard skepticism that the project was possible in a section of Downtown that includes so many empty buildings and empty parking lots.
But the plan for the Sterick is more than just the renovation of a building. The group behind the project, Constellation Properites, owns or controls ten separate parcels in the neighborhood around the building, and Constellation is planning the Memphis Public Market across the street, development of Stereo Alley nearby and the formation of a non-profit, HiFi Memphis, to help with development.
This week on “The Sidebar,” the principal of Constellation, Stuart Harris, and the executive director of HiFi Memphis, Mersadies Burch, joined me to talk about the scope and scale of the project.

We talked about the vision for renovating a largely blighted area Downtown, the financing the project will entail, plans for parking and new construction, and even timelines for development. (Teaser: They hope to see major work beginning in the next 12 months.)
