As more than 20 local arts organizations approach their twentieth anniversaries and the Memphis Art Museum moves toward its opening Downtown, the Hyde Family Foundation is looking to highlight the impact of the arts on Memphis.

Rachel Knox, senior program officer for arts & culture for the Hyde Family Foundation, joined me on this week’s episode of “The Sidebar” to talk not just about the arts organizations that the foundation has supported, but the entire landscape of the arts in Memphis. 

From visual arts to music to museums to dance and the performing arts to collaborations among a range of arts organizations, Rachel has seen the impact the arts has on Memphis and beyond.

But we also talked about the ways the arts intersections with parks and public spaces, with business and more. From the art gates in Overton Park to murals on the sides of buildings from local artists like Birdcap to the design of the basketball courts in Tom Lee Park to the reach of Opera Memphis and The Shell into neighborhoods around the city, the arts are having impacts throughout Memphis.
