After the first plane hit the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, Michael Lavoie and the Tennessee Task Force One immediately began to prepare for recovery efforts. He had just finished heavy training and their team deployed to Washington, D.C., to aid in search and rescue at the Pentagon.

“We had to stabilize the building, clear debris so it’d be safe to be able to go in there, but it wasn’t really a rescue effort at that time. It was recovery and trying to figure out what happened, who was accounted for,” Lavoie said. “It was a gruesome task; it’s what we had to do. Our team saw some really bad stuff at times. Stuff you never forget.”

Lavoie was one of many first responders who attended a Friday, Sept. 11, ceremony at The Fire Museum of Memphis marking the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
