Daily Jigsaw: A soul for Stax

For Noah Israel, winning a songwriting contest at Stax Music Academy was about more than the $500 prize.

The 21-year-old Memphis musician spent six years at the academy, which offers after-school and summer programming. On Saturday, Sept. 26, she returned to the Soulsville institution as a finalist in Beat Garden’s What Is Soul? Mic Drop Songwriting Contest and left as its winner.


The competition was part of Beat Garden, a weekend-long gathering that brought young Memphis-area musicians together with working artists, producers and other music industry professionals.
