Daily Jigsaw: Break the ice breakers
The first thing you notice at the Hershey plant on Kansas Street is the minty smell.
The light and refreshing scent is almost everywhere in the 450,000-square-foot space: in the lobby, in the hallways, in the offices and on much of the factory floor.
And if you don’t smell mint, there’s a chance it’s because you’re smelling licorice.
The aromas pervading the plant are the result of the massive operation running 24 hours a day, five days a week.
Each day, it makes about 60,000 pounds of Ice Breakers Gum, which is 300,000 pounds a week and more than 15 million pounds a year.
Add that to the 22 million pounds of Ice Breaker Mints and Good & Plenty Licorice, and you’ve got 37 million pounds of Hershey candy coming out of Memphis annually.
In fact, the plant is the exclusive global producer of Ice Breaker products — which means all the Ice Breakers gum and mints bought worldwide were created and packaged in the Bluff City.
