An autopsy report released Thursday, May 4, by the West Tennessee Regional Forensic Center indicates Tyre Nichols died from blunt force injuries to the head.
MPD will lead security, with augmentation from other agencies, including the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
“Here again it underlines and highlights the issue that’s going on ... here in Tennessee,” said Van Turner, president of the NAACP Memphis branch. “The inaction of our legislators has jeopardized ... many more lives to come.”
The autopsy report has not yet been released to the public, but Nichols’ family was briefed on the results Wednesday by Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy.

The shooting in the 4800 block of Poplar Avenue occurred at 7:13 p.m. after the off-duty approached the individual and two or three other suspects who were breaking into a Dodge Charger.
Laderio Gordon, 29, is charged with rape of a child, especially aggravated kidnapping and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
At least 300 people attended the ceremony, hosted by MPD, where officers and civilians received honors for Officer of the Year and Supervisor of the Year for each precinct as well as the Medal of Valor, Lifesaving Medal, Citizen’s Valor and others.
“This is part ... of an overall outreach program,” Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy said. “I think it’s important for the DA to be out in the community as much as possible and get input from the community.”
The suspect was positively identified by two juvenile victims, whose identities will remain anonymous.
With business burglaries currently up 46%, compared to the same period in 2022, MPD and the District Attorney’s Office are trying something new.
MPD has conducted investigations in Gaslight, Bunker Hill and Cane Creek for weeks, determining in the “early morning hours,” a man has been approaching “young females” and forcing them into his vehicle.
MPD brass told the Memphis City Council the department plans to take youth breaking curfew Downtown to the Greenlaw Community Center, which the city’s parks department is relinquishing to police.
“We’re seeing those bridge lights come on to honor the victims, to honor their families, to shine a light and attention on their needs, and also to shine the light of truth,” District Attorney Steve Mulroy said.
Reported major violent crime is up 7.7% in Memphis and 5.4% in Shelby County. Major property crime has increased more dramatically, however, driven by a 155% increase in vehicle thefts in the city.
The training came nearly a month after three students and three teachers were killed at Covenant School in Nashville, which previously received private security consulting from Defend Systems.
A meeting Tuesday between stakeholders and the Memphis Police Department resulted in an agreement on a Downtown pilot curfew program that will eventually be implemented citywide. Many program details remain unclear, including where and how MPD will detain minors.
