Shelby County has the kits and lab space to test 5,000 people a day for COVID-19, but declining demand and other issues have kept daily tests below 1,000 just as the need for testing grows.
Shelby County, as of April 16, has 1,508 confirmed coronavirus cases and 32 deaths out of the 15,667 total tests taken, according to data from the Shelby County Health Department.
Shelby County is reporting 1,432 cases of coronavirus and 31 deaths as of Wednesday, April 15.
All of these coronavirus testing sites require appointments, which can usually be made through phone calls or text messages.
The immediate goal is to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus. But the elected leaders and health experts who are working toward that goal come from different experiences with different responsibilities beyond dealing with a pandemic.
“The goal isn’t so much to expand the volume of testing but the equity of testing, both demographically and geographically,” said Jenny Bartlett-Prescott, chief operating officer of Church Health who is leading the task force’s testing subgroup.
Since it began coronavirus testing March 21, Christ Community has tested more than 400 people and assessed over 2,000 potential cases over the phone.
