The investigation comes after the Jan. 12 death of Ramon McGhee; his family stated through attorney Ben Crump that McGhee was covered in a “massive amount” of lice and bed bugs when he arrived at the hospital. McGhee’s passing followed the 10 others who died in either of SCSO’s jails in 2023.
Ramon McGhee was found unresponsive in his cell on Jan. 10, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating McGhee’s death.
The family of a teenager who died after a physical altercation at a Youth Villages facility discussed video footage of the encounter with members of the media Wednesday, Dec. 27.
The logs were requested to verify that nine officers indicted for Freeman’s death are no longer working at the jail, also known simply as 201 Poplar.
Attorney Ben Crump disclosed Alegend Jones’ medical records during a press conference as he urged Youth Villages to release video of the event that led to her injuries.

Deion Byrd was stabbed Oct. 26 in a holding cell awaiting a court appearance at the Walter L. Bailey Jr. Criminal Justice Center, more commonly known as 201 Poplar.
Deion Byrd’s family is the fifth in the Memphis-Shelby County area who have lost loved ones during interactions with law enforcement to hire Ben Crump for representation.
“Thank God, because the grand jury, the citizens of Shelby County, saw the same video we saw and said that that is not right,” Attorney Ben Crump said, standing with family of Gershun Freeman, who was killed at Shelby County Jail. Related story:

Courtney Ross’ death is the fourth local case with which civil rights attorney Ben Crump has become involved.
Almost three weeks have gone by since Hudspeth died and his family, along with the public, still lack answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.
The autopsy report has not yet been released to the public, but Nichols’ family was briefed on the results Wednesday by Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy.
