In September, the DeSoto County NAACP filed a complaint in federal court claiming the county’s 2022 redistricting plan hinders the ability of Black voters to elect candidates of their choice.
There is an early-voting day scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m to 12 p.m.
DeSoto County is about 31% Black, but none of the 25 current officeholders elected from districts provided by the 2022 plan are Black.
Additional equipment is necessary to meet the needs of five new precincts as a result of redistricting, election commissioners said at the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors’ meeting on Monday, March 20.
With a new set of election days looming in DeSoto County, officials are looking at new equipment, new voting locations and hoping to increase pay for poll workers.
