The massive job to refurbish the century-old structure next to Overton Park is on the drawing board, but there is no concrete plan for when the work will start or finish.
A one-story building behind the apartments will be razed to make way for a parking lot with a brick wall barrier.
“It’s so sad, because there were people there that had very severe handicaps,” said one former resident. “It was very difficult for them. They were almost homeless. And they were able to somehow gather the money to pay to move.”
Plans for redevelopment of the senior-living residence, located at 1914 Poplar Ave., were filed on April 7. The building’s new owner says residents and staff were notified in January of plans.
Plans were submitted to convert the landmark at 1914 Poplar Ave. into market-rate apartments. An additional request to place the site on the National Register of Historic Places was also submitted.
