No one at the state level has endorsed the concept of separating the court system in Memphis from the suburbs and unincorporated areas. It would be complicated, with issues both political and constitutional.

The DA’s office will now receive $991,178 for the remainder of the fiscal year 2024, which comes out of the general fund balance. Each following fiscal year, the DA’s office will receive $2.98 million.
“To say that that first year was a challenging one would be an understatement,” Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy said.
Some of the 120 prosecutors working in the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office make as much as $70,000 more than their colleagues who work next to them.
“We want to make it clear that those who violate the law will be prosecuted, and those who engage in violence or repeat nonviolent offenses will face the consequences, including incarceration.”
“If you come through the doors of this building having committed one of these offenses, you will be held accountable,” Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy said.
The DA’s office hopes to put its data-collecting initiatives to action by speeding up case processing and get victims connected to services more quickly.Related story:

“I think the consistent message from all of us and several others … is that we all recognize that we have a serious crime problem,” DA Mulroy said.
“These locations have been the site of repeated crimes in the neighborhood and have been the subject of numerous complaints from residents as being not only the site, but the drivers of crime in that neighborhood.”
