Sylvamo’s strong quarter is in contrast to other Memphis-based companies, particularly FedEx and International Paper, both of which reported lower-than-expected earnings in their most recent quarters.
A spinoff of International Paper, Sylvamo became a standalone, publicly traded company last fall.
The Memphis-based company’s board of directors unanimously adopted a limited-duration shareholder rights plan, known as a “poison pill.”
More than 375 companies around the world — including FedEx Corp. and Sylvamo Corp. — have suspended operations in the region following the humanitarian crisis created in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“If we want to solve this problem in Ukraine using gas and oil as one of the solutions, then in fact it’s going to cost us,” said a local economist.
Russian operations accounted for roughly 15% of Sylvamo’s total revenue in 2021.
Sylvamo Corporation, a new spin-off of International Paper, is considering where to put its global headquarters that will create 300 jobs paying $179,000 on average in salaries and bonuses, or $217,133 a year including benefits.
