The National Civil Rights Museum had planned a large celebration to honor what would have been King’s 95th birthday, but as the weather forecast became clear, they realized they would have to pivot.

The national tour of “Solidarity Now! 1968 Poor People’s Campaign” debuted at the Memphis museum in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
“Just as the Lorraine (Motel) was one of the few places in the 1960s where African Americans were welcomed, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital opened its doors to all at the height of formal segregation,” said Russell Wigginton, president of the National Civil Rights Museum.
Clayborn Temple, Mason Temple Church of God in Christ and the National Civil Rights Museum are among the Memphis sites.
Memphis community organizations are offering several days of upcoming volunteer opportunities in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
The event will also include special recognition of the teenager who recorded the last moments of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020.
Candacy Taylor's book examines the legacy of the Green Book, a guide for black motorists during segregation. But her Memphis-bred stepfather contributed more than her research could offer. She'll speak in Memphis Feb. 27.
