After 12 years, Overton Park Conservancy executive director Tina Sullivan is ready to step down and she’s confident the green space will endure and thrive under the next generation of leadership.
“There is something uniquely magical about this place that inspires such strong bonds among the people who come here, and I am grateful to have been woven into this park’s storied history,” said Overton Park Conservancy’s executive director.
For decades, a dozen acres of old-growth forest have been separated from Overton Park by a chain-link fence, but the area could reconnect to the park’s existing trail system by the end of the year.
The $3 million in federal funding is being subbed for $3 million in private funds raised by the Overton Park Conservancy and the Memphis Zoo toward the parking solution.
Inspired by the Japanese concept of shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing,” the Overton Park Conservancy is focused on connecting the community to nature. A week of mindful, outdoor activities begin with a stroll through the Old Forest.
