Severe weather started Wednesday and continued into Thursday morning with heavy rainfall, gusts of wind up to 55 miles per hour and a brief tornado watch.
About 216,000 Memphis Light Gas & Water customers lost power in recent days due to high winds and thunderstorms. By Saturday evening, the number was below 17,000.
The area is under a severe thunderstorm watch until at least midnight and an excessive heat warning Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m., meaning the heat index could reach 112 degrees.

MLGW customers received a text Sunday that said, “due to the number of outages, outage-update texts are disabled.”
“The risk of additional forced blackouts is low for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day,” said MLGW President and CEO Doug McGowen.
“Our return to civilization and the miraculous recovery of our internet connection.”
Out of about 140,000 Memphis Light, Gas & Water customers who lost power Thursday, thousands still do not have electricity.
The number of people without power remained at about 20% of MLGW’s customers by 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
