Tonywatch: Playwright Katori Hall ‘reaching for humanity’
Director Phyllida Lloyd (left), and playwright Katori Hall take a bow during the curtain call on opening night of "Tina – The Tina Turner Musical" in New York on Nov. 7, 2019. Most playwrights who dip their toes into musical theater for the first time go small. Not Katori Hall: Her first assignment was to capture the life of Tina Turner. (Evan Agostini/Invision/AP file)
The former Memphian “had no qualms” about the project. “I grew up in Tennessee. Tina (Turner) grew up in Tennessee. I know that place. I know the culture.” Hall is up for two Tony Awards at the ceremony Sunday, Sept. 26.
