Metal Museum plans to open Overton Park space in 2026

For the past several years, Carissa Hussong has been shepherding the massive project to expand the National Ornamental Metal Museum to the former Memphis College of Art space in Overton Park.
But there’s still so much work to do between now and the Sept. 5, 2026, opening date that Hussong vacillates daily on whether to feel a sense of accomplishment or, perhaps, one of terror.
“It depends on the moment that you ask me that question,” said Hussong, who has led the Metal Museum since 2007. “Sometimes it’s a little terrifying to think about all the things that we need to get done between now and September, which is not that far away.”
