Memphis theaters are hotter than July

If you thought theaters were dark in the summer, think again. Four shows open in July with topics ranging from opera to Greek tragedy to pop music to new works, but all are women-centric. 

‘Antigone or And Still She Must Rise Up’ at Germantown Community Theatre

Germantown Community Theatre opens its 53rd season with an all-student production of “Antigone or And Still She Must Rise Up.”

Madeline Sayet wrote the modern adaptation of the Greek myth in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest. The plague has not yet left Thebes, but this broken world sees a new leader rise.

‘Coco Queens’ at TheatreWorks@TheSquare

A winner of the 2023 NewWorks@TheWorks Playwriting Competition, “Coco Queens” by LaDarrion Williams will make its world premiere this month at TheatreWorks. The playwriting competition is held each year with a focus on nurturing original theater.
