Four Memphis artists share a birthday and an exhibition

‘November 1’ opening reception at Marshall Arts Gallery, Saturday, Nov. 1:

Memphis artists Chuck Johnson, Rose Marr, Dimitri Stevens and Kaylyn Webster discovered they share the same birthday — Nov. 1 — and decided to team up for a birthday exhibition. The show opens on the quartet’s birthday. 

Johnson and Stevens work in abstraction, while Marr and Webster create representational works. Johnson works in oil and mixed media, Marr’s signature is crayon on wood, Stevens is a mixed-media artist and Webster primarily works in oil. 

Johnson, an Army veteran, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Art History from Memphis State University and has taught art at Memphis College of Art and the University of Memphis. He is a Memphis native.

Webster earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. She is a Memphis native. 

Marr earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and printmaking from Memphis College of Art and is a full-time artist and former high school art teacher. Marr was born in Senatobia and moved to Memphis at age 5.

Stevens, who is from Oakland, Tennessee, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Memphis College of Art. 

The exhibition will be on view through Nov. 22. Normal gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays or by appointment (510-978-1706).

‘Odds and Ends’ opening reception at Ugly Art Co., Friday, Nov. 14:

“Odds and Ends” is the senior Bachelor of Fine Arts thesis exhibition for University of Memphis students. The students are Chloe Kauffman, Christopher Williams, Cib Harris, Dejane J. Anderson, Elizabeth Acton, Florence Goodin, Gabriel Skinnere, Kenneth J., MaryMargaret Kutas, McKenzie Bell, Olivia Rae Malone and Tamya Brown. The exhibition will be on view through Dec. 2. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. 

5-7 p.m. (opening reception). Free admission. 635 Madison Ave.

Kat Cole’s ‘Meditations’ opening at the Metal Museum, Sunday, Nov. 16:

Columbus, Georgia, metalsmith Kat Cole works with steel and glass. In “Meditations,” she focuses on the human experience. Cole cuts hand-drawn ovals from steel and uses a hammer to round the edges. “Meditations” also refers to the act of Cole making the works. Cole earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Fine Arts from East Carolina University. Her work has been shown in North America, Europe and Asia, and is in collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Enamel Foundation, and the Houston Museum of Fine Art. 

A reception will be held 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23 (RSVP here). The artist talk begins at 3:30 p.m.

The show will be on view through March 8, 2026, in the New Accessions Gallery. The museum is open during regular hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

‘Polishing the Stone’ opening reception at ShapeShifter Art School and Gallery, Saturday, Nov. 22:

ShapeShifter’s first exhibition opening also serves as the opening for the new facility. “‘Polishing the Stone” features works by its five founders: Elizabeth Alley, Melissa Dunn, Pam McDonnell, Nikii Richey and Lisa Williamson. Classes, workshops and open studio sessions for those age 18 and up will begin Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026. All experience levels are welcome. Shapeshifter’s mission is “ to build a vibrant, creative art community where teachers and students feel empowered to challenge conventional thinking, embrace originality, and co-create a transformative learning experience.” 

The founders say they “champion radical pedagogy and horizontal knowledge sharing.”
