Daily Memphian reporters among Tennessee AP contest winners

The Daily Memphian won four awards in this year's Tennessee Associated Press Broadcasters and Media Editors competition.

Winners were announced April 27 in Nashville.

Sports reporter John Varlas captured both first and second place in the Division 1 Sports-Outdoors category. He won first place for his story "Margolin Hebrew Academy balances faith and basketball" and second place in the category for "After 20 years of chasing the next college job, Scott Cherry is happy to have landed at Briarcrest."

Tom Bailey won first place in the Division 1 Business News category for "Marked Up: Running a business with a face tattoo."

Wayne Risher won second place in the Division 1 Business News category for "Albert Glenn Stood on Shoulders of Pioneering Black Pilots at FedEx Then Paid It Forward."

In addition, Marc Perrusquia, director of the Institute for Public Service Reporting at the University of Memphis, won the Division 1 first place Malcolm Law Award for Investigative Reporting for a piece published in The Daily Memphian, “A Reluctance to Record.”

The Institute for Public Service Reporting provides its content exclusively to The Daily Memphian.

This year's contest winners were selected from more than 630 entries submitted from across the state. 

The contest honors the best journalism in Tennessee in 2018, and it is sponsored by the School of Journalism at Middle Tennessee State University.
