Hopes and fears swirl around tariffs in Memphis, starting at car lots

Between hail and politics, Kent Ritchey had enough on his mind Wednesday, April 2, to set his heart racing.
Ritchey is the majority owner of the 12 Landers car dealerships here where hail dents wipe out profits faster than a flying cold front. Tariffs, particularly at 25%, are worse, setting up what could be the first double-digit price increase he’s seen in 55 years in automobile sales.
