A traveler who passed through Memphis International Airport recently has tested positive for measles, Shelby County health officials said Thursday, Jan. 8.
The traveler was in the airport from 11 p.m. Dec. 30 to 2 a.m. Dec. 31 and from 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 3, according to the Shelby County Health Department.
The traveler’s residence is being withheld for privacy and health confidentiality, health department spokeswoman Joan Carr said.
Carr said there are currently no measle cases countywide and the risk is low.
Symptoms from measles typically occur from seven to 14 days after exposure but can take up to three weeks to surface. They include fever, coughing, a runny nose, red or watery eyes, white spots inside the mouth or a red rash usually starting on the face and spreads.
People who have not been vaccinated and were at the airport during the above times should call 901-222-9243. If you believe you have been exposed, officials ask that you contact urgent care or a hospital before you arrive.
