Cyclospora outbreak sends shoppers flocking to Memphis farmers markets
Local farmers markets have seen increased attendance since the cyclospora outbreak. (The Daily Memphian files)
The Black Farmers Market in South Memphis usually sees about 40 customers each week, but that number has recently soared to about 100.
The increase is being driven by the ongoing nationwide cyclospora parasite outbreak as shoppers turn to local farmers markets for produce.
“Our main farmer has sold out twice in the past two weeks, and we’ve had to reorder and have the farmer bring back more food,” said Brittney Sessoms, founder and executive director of the Center for Black Southern Culture — the organization that runs Black Farmers Market at 491 E. McLemore Ave. every Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. “So we’ve had to kind of double up on our order.”
