North Memphis Grocery Project on hold until more ‘heads and beds’

A vacant 15-acre lot on Chelsea Avenue in North Memphis was slated to have a grocery store earlier this year, but the developer shifted its focus to add more housing first. 

Cornelius Sanders, president and CEO of Promise Development Corp., initially planned in 2022 to develop the North Memphis Grocery Project, a project that was expected to bring fresh produce to Hyde Park by 2025.

Now, as the City of Memphis and Shelby County work on a housing plan for the area, Sanders is unsure when the grocery project will come to fruition.
