Cleaner streets aim to boost Downtown’s appeal

The Downtown Memphis Commission’s focus on cleanliness is paying off as it dedicates more employees, technology and equipment, including a bike-mounted street sweeper named after a blues legend.
The DMC adopted a Downtown Action Plan last year with the first priority listed being “Make Downtown Memphis attractive, safe and welcoming.”
Through June this year, that has meant the DMC has cleaned 9,937 public fixtures and trash cans, removed 1,769 posters and stickers and cleared 108 graffiti tags. It has also done more than 9,500 new plantings across Downtown.
