Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to visit Memphis Thursday, Dec. 3, in connection with Operation Warp Speed, according to the White House.

A statement said Pence will discuss the program for developing and distributing a COVID-19 vaccine during a roundtable that highlights the public-private partnership in the vaccine development.

Memphis-based FedEx, which is gearing up to move vaccines, is expected to be on Pence’s itinerary.

FedEx ‘incredibly confident’ in vaccine delivery plan

“FedEx executives are scheduled to meet with Vice President Pence and federal and state officials in Memphis Thursday to discuss preparations to transport COVID-19 vaccines after they are approved,” said Jenny Robertson, FedEx senior vice president, integrated marketing and communications.

FedEx has been working with vaccine manufacturers, including Pfizer, and preparing for months to move vaccines through its global network once approval is given.

FedEx kicks into high gear as peak season arrives

It could not be determined Tuesday night whether FedEx is taking part in a pre-approval airlift of vaccines. United Airlines started flying Pfizer vaccines between Brussels and Chicago last week to speed up the distribution process once the Food and Drug Administration gives emergency authorization.

FedEx is known to have ultra-cold storage capabilities meeting requirements of Pfizer and other vaccine manufacturers in Memphis and across its network.

Pfizer and McKesson, a key player in vaccine logistics, have major distribution centers in Memphis.

Other details about Pence’s visit were not immediately available.
