Amazon’s emerging presence in Memphis – as an employer instead of an online seller – is hitting full stride with the announcement Thursday that the world’s largest online retailer wants to hire 1,500 people at two Memphis facilities.

The full-time and part-time jobs are located in two Southeast Memphis buildings.

Amazon’s press release did not give addresses, but the company has just built a $72 million “receive center’’ at 3292 Holmes and told local officials that about 600 people would work there. And in July, Amazon applied for a building permit to do a $10 million renovation of an existing, 400,000-square-foot warehouse at 5155 Citation.

The company’s announcement on Thursday described one of its facilities as a distribution center and the other a “sortation’’ center.

Hiring begins Oct. 2 for more than 800 full-time positions at Amazon’s distribution center. And hiring is already occurring for more than 700 part-time jobs at the sortation center.

Anyone interested in applying can go to All applicants must apply online, where they can indicate their preference for shifts and make and appointment to attend hiring events and orientations.

Applicants must be at least 18 and have a high school diploma or equivalent degree.

Jobs in the fulfillment center range from selecting items and sorting packages to shopping for customers in a grocery store.
