Memphis International Airport officially renamed after Frederick W. Smith

For more than five minutes Tuesday, Aug. 11, hundreds of people waited under a large, air-conditioned event tent awaiting the landing of FedEx Flight 1944 at Memphis International Airport.Â
As people waited, Richard Smith, a FedEx Corp. senior executive and son of the late founder Frederick W. Smith, made it clear to those attending: the plane was running on time.
It was the program to celebrate renaming the airport Frederick W. Smith International Airport that had wrapped up quicker than planned, he said.
